Linux Rocks…sorta

March 11th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Okay, I just managed to get my Linksys wireless 54G card working under Linux.  This is not something that has been easy for me in the past, but for some reason tonight it was extraordinarily easy.  I think there’s a system within Linux that arbitrarily decides when Linux will work according to what the various documentation packages on the Internet say, and when it won’t.  Tonight, the planets were aligned, the gods smiled down on me, and Murphy went to bed, and my wireless card works.

I think the real problem with Linux is that the smart people who know how to make Linux rock for them don’t know how to write quality documentation that will make it easy for the rest of us normal people to get Linux working.  There’s not enough well trained tech writers out there who also know how to code, or enought developers out there who also happen to be well trained tech writers.  I consider myself in the former category.  I don’t know how to code (very much), but I’m damn good at writing.   If there were any money in writing documentation for open source software, I’d go into the business.

So here I am, very happy that my mobile computer can actually be mobile.  Now I have to get my computer screen looking right.

Later.

I used RedHat and FreeBSD a lot when I worked for a little start-up company and I loved them. But when I started working for an evil corporation I had to switch to Windows, and had to install it at home too so I could work from home. Bah!

Btw, your template seems to work on IE now. The header looks great too! Just one suggestion though: can you make the header link back to the homepage?
