…This post has nothing to do with you, so you may immediately ignore it.
However, if you’re an Outlook user, pay attention. I would like to take a brief moment to make another surefire recomendation for another software product. This one, unlike the WordPress plug, is not free, but the price isn’t outrageous, either, unlike the price for Outlook itself, but that’s a topic for another post.
Anyway, the software in question is called EZDetach, by a company which calls itself TechHit.com. My readers are (as I’ve always said) the brightest on the planet, so I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to figure out what their web site URI is. That being said, I also know that web surfers are inherently lazy, so I’ll provide a link here, anyway.
So what does this product do? It provides a fast and easy way to save multiple file attachments from multiple e-mail messages in one fell swoop. If you’re like me, and who isn’t, you get e-mails from family and friends that contain about 34 billion image files attached to them, all showing off pictures of someone’s new house construction, new baby, cute antics of said new baby, or their dog/cat/tarantula/etc. Also, if you’re like me, you don’t save those images right away but instead leave them languishing in your inbox, taking up huge amounts of prescious PST space, until one day, several years later, you decide to save them all. Saving said 34 billion images, under normal Outlook operations, is time consuming and inefficient. You have to open up each message, then click each image (or other filetype) and select the SAVE button, then specify where on your hard drive to put the image, and then click the SAVE button again, and then hope to Bob that you remember the exact location where you saved the image because you’ve already deleted the message and now everything is gone!
Sorry, I got a little excited there. It won’t happen again.
EZDetach fixes all of that (except the part about receiving the messages to begin with). To save all of your attachments, you simply select the messages with said files, hit the EZDetach button, and follow the instructions on the screen. It really is very easy, quick, and extremely efficient.
I’m not sure if you know this, but there’s a file size limitation on an Outlook PST file. The PST file is the file where all of your Outlook information is stored. Everything from your Contacts to your Calendar to your messages (including the attachments) are stored here. Once your PST file hits two (2) gigabytes in size, the world blows up.
No, seriously, it doesn’t do that. Donald Rumsfeld deals with that. But if your PST file hits 2 GB, it will no longer accept anymore information. You’ll have to either start a new one, or empty your current one. And we all know how enjoyable that can be, right?
EZDetach helps you keep your PST file size small and manageable. I do have a couple of suggestions, though. First, I’d like to see this product available for multiple platforms. Not everyone uses Outlook (gasp!), and this issue with file attachments plagues other systems, as well. Thunderbird, Mozilla, even Outlook Express could all benefit from this product. Second, it’d be nice to see something that shows me which attachments have already been saved and which haven’t. At least, put something in the program that tracks that so I don’t perform redundant filesaves. Just some suggestions for the developers. Overall, though, it’s a very good program.
