Law of the Land

So I’m in my new hotel, and I’m looking over the rules for the room I’m staying in and I’m just a bit confused about something. It says here, and I quote (I’m not making this up);

“All moneys, jewelry, coats, valises, and other valuables must be left at the office and checks received therefor; otherwise the proprietor will not be responsible for any loss.”

This sounds pretty important. I’m not sure why the proprietor would want me to check my coat, and I don’t have any jewelry (the Pacific ocean made sure of that), but what the hell is a valice, and how do I know if I have one? Is it contagious? What if I have one, but I don’t know it, and it gets stolen? Who do I report that to?

I also notice it says nothing about laptop computers. Does this mean that if I leave my laptop in my room, and it gets stolen or otherwise lost, that I can blame the proprietor and not (as is my habit) my parents? There are so many questions!

    According to my Mirriam-Webster, a valise is a suitcase. However, I do not know for the life of me why you would want to check a suitcase unless perhaps it is a designer bag which you probably would have paid entirely too much money for. Have a nice day!! ;-)
