Roofs and Other Hazzards of Home Ownership

July 27th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Last night we had quite a large storm pass through here.  This morning, my wife and I were pleased to learn that our roof has a leak in it.  This news meant that I would now have an excuse to crawl around inside my attic in the heat of summer in order to determine where the leak was, and what it would take to fix it.  All day long I looked forward to this exercise with the same level of enthusiasm as being audited by the IRS.  Of course, I've never been audited by the IRS, so I can only assume that this is a very exciting and wonderful experience.

After crawling around in my attic for what seemed like mere minutes (as God sees them), imagine my dismay when I learned that I would not be required to completely tear down and rebuild the entire roof.   You know those pipes and vents and things that stick out at the top of your roof?  It turns out those things have this sealant stuff that seals up the holes in the roof from which they stick out.  I had one of these where the sealant had broken up and degraded over time, leaving a gaping crack through which water, being water, decided to pour.  You can imagine my disappointment when I learned that it would only cost me $3.50 to fix.

There is good news, though. It looks like we’ll get to spend roughly $400.00 on a brand new evaporative cooler very soon.  So that’s at least somewhat of a silver lining.  I’ll also get to do a patch job on the ceiling to repair the damp drywall that has appeared just underneath the cooler due to water leaking from it.  I just love home repair projects.   Especially the ones you don’t plan for.  The ones that sap out all the money you were saving for all those unnecessary beautification projects like landscaping and improving the curb appeal.

So sorry about the $3.50 repair.  Wish it had cost more.  Good news about the cooler though.  Who needs those beautification things anyway.

Speaking of being audited by the IRS, I noticed that someone from the IRS has been reading my blog! I have nothing to hide, but when I saw it on the sitemeter, I almost had a serious panic attack!
