Tonight's HNT entry takes me into what I hope to be a whole new era in photo manipulation and creation. I have recently discovered a 3D animation and rendering software package called Blender . It's completely open source, which means it costs nothing. The quality of the rendered images rivals those from commercial packages that I've seen, including Brice, TrueSpace, Lightwave, and 3D Studio Max. I've seen some of the animations that people have made from these, and the images are nothing short of spectacular. A level of quality you'd expect from Pixar and DreamWorks Animation . The fact that it's free software (and I mean no cost, here) is not lost on me. So tonight I present to you my first true created-from-the-ground-up HNT.
The chess pieces were created using the Blender software and rendered from a model created by Xero_Xero . You can get the original model and see other images generated from it here. I modified the lights slightly to change the look, but I'm such a noob to Blender that truthfully, I had about as much an idea of what I was doing as phlegm does in a decongestant plant. I really had no idea what look I was going for, but I knew it had to look something like this. So here you go.
Happy HNT, everyone. If you're looking for HNT goodness, go visit OsBasso's place.
